Korean SK Mobile Opens Handset Factory in Xinjiang, China
December 29, 2005
Korean SK Mobile recently opened a mobile phone production facility in the city of Urumqi, the capital of the Chinese autonomous region Xinjiang, with mass production expected to start in the near future. Initial annual capacity will be 250,000 units, which the company eventually plans to increase to 800,000 units in the future.

SK Mobile was originally established by SK Teletech, but SK Teletech was acquired by Korean Pantech in mid-2005. However, the Chinese government demanded that the SK conglomerate participated in SK Mobile's factory in Xinjiang, and therefore SK acquired a 42.5% stake in the company, with another 42.5% stake held by Pantech, while the remaining 15% is in the hands of Chinese Datang and the Xinjiang Tiandi Group.
